Oilfield Microbiologist

We are looking for a permanent consultant microbiologist to work in the Microbiology Team at Oil Plus’s Headquarters in Newbury, UK. The successful candidate will be required to travel overseas.

Responsibilities

The position will include project managing multi-disciplinary studies, with offshore and onshore field analysis, process audits and operational support, as well as being involved in our research and development projects as and when required.

  • Undertaking chemical efficacy studies, sampling and analysis and site audits
  • Follow established laboratory site procedures and Oil Plus work scopes
  • Contribute to, and generate, novel work scopes and procedures to keep Oil Plus at the forefront of oilfield microbiology
  • Manage cost and time constraints
  • Perform risk assessments
  • Writing technical reports and papers for journals
  • Laboratory and desktop R&D involving microbial growth experiments to study geochemical interactions between microorganisms and their environments
  • Keeping up to date with developments and new research

Requirements

  • A BSc or PhD in microbiology, ideally with exposure to environmental microbiology and geochemistry
  • Laboratory experience in microbial culturing and experimentation and molecular microbiological testing such as, quantitative PCR (qPCR) and next-generation DNA sequencing (NGS)
  • On-site field experience desirable
  • Knowledge in one or more areas beneficial including: microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC), reservoir souring and growth in the deep subsurface, antimicrobial applications or microbial detection
  • Ability to work on both small and large multi-disciplinary projects, either as the project manager or as part of a project team
  • Team working, organisation, a pro-active attitude and a willingness to carry out roles not normally part of the day to day work activities
  • Intermediate/advanced skills using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and project management tools
  • Good presentation skills for delivery of project and research data to clients, and at industry forums and conferences
  • Experience with bioinformatics analysis and packages such as QIIME, MEGAN, or similar beneficial
  • Familiarity with health and safety regulations
