Laboratory Supervisor

We are looking to recruit a permanent laboratory supervisor to work in our Newbury facilities. The successful candidate should have experience in physical and inorganic chemistry, microbiology and general laboratory safety procedures such as; COSHH, MSDS, and IATA regulations. The position will require packing and organising shipment of equipment, laboratory consumables, chemicals and other oilfield fluids, therefore preparation of Certificate of Origin’s would be an advantage.

Must have minimum HNC or a first degree in chemistry and applied sciences.

Responsibilities

The person will be responsible for managing the day-to-day running of the laboratory, the laboratory assistant and workshop technician. The role will require liaising with the technical manager, and team of scientists and engineers on multi-discipline studies, as well as assistance with ongoing research and development projects.

  • Maintain, update and, as appropriate, disseminate COSHH and MSDS data
  • Prepare, or assist others in preparation of, Risk Assessments for laboratory areas
  • Ensure adherence to safe working practices in the laboratory and workshop
  • Ensure laboratory, workshop and on-site equipment (on departure from Oil Plus) is suitably serviced, safe to operate and correctly calibrated (or dispatched with appropriate calibration materials where on-site calibration is essential). Prepare all documentation for the dispatch of on-site equipment. Certificate of Origin, ATA Carnet, CARICOMs etc
  • Pack, or organise packing, and documentation for shipment of hazardous/dangerous goods under IATA regulations,
  • Ensure laboratory analysis is correctly conducted, at the necessary time, and that results are recorded, checked and passed on to appropriate personnel (usually to in-house Oil Plus staff)
  • Complete projects by assisting project team; attending and participating in group and project meetings
  • Purchase consumables and equipment as appropriate for general laboratory use (as an overhead expense) or for specific projects for internal or external clients
  • Ensure laboratory wastes are prepared, documented and disposed of according to applicable standards
  • Ensure all aspects of laboratory operation adhere to, and appropriately document Oil Plus requirements for ISO 9000 accreditation and associated internal and third-party audits
  • Assist in the organisation of the maintenance of facilities, including electrical testing of portable apparatus for the laboratory and office equipment
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical publications
  • Enhance laboratory and organisation reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments

Requirements

  • HNC or BSc/MSc in chemistry and applied sciences
  • Methodical approach for analysing samples and collating data
  • Experience in chemistry techniques and equipment calibration
  • Laboratory skills, such as general technical ability and safety awareness
  • Follow procedures on established workscopes and demonstrate technical initiative when circumstances require any variations
  • Research skills and the ability to manage a project or study
  • Working knowledge Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, laboratory and project management tools
  • Analytical thinker with good organisation and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to work as part of a team
  • A pro-active attitude and a willingness to carry out roles not normally part of the day to day work activities
  • Aptitude for self-development
