Abstract

On-site Biocide Testing in Upstream Oil and Gas Production and Water Injection Facilities using a Biocide Evaluation Test Apparatus (BETA)

In order to conduct on-site biocide evaluations in oil and gas facilities, we have developed a bespoke biocide evaluation test apparatus or BETA, which has been deployed in numerous facilities over a number of years. This apparatus, which can be used to grow biofilms under production or water injection system conditions, has the facility to dose up to 16 biocides at different dose rates and contact times, over the course of many repeated dosings. Thus realistically simulating pipeline conditions (e.g. flow rate, temperature, pressure, water chemistry, surface materials, etc.) where the biocide is to be dosed.

The presentation will examine several case studies where the BETA has been deployed, in order to ascertain the best performing biocide regimen in a variety of different production and water injection environments. The importance of conducting biocide tests correctly and how techno-economical ranking of different biocide regimes should be conducted will also be discussed.
